About Us

Responsible Growth Midland is a community group composed of concerned citizens in northwest Midland’s District 4.  The organization advocates for responsible growth, prioritizing community safety, and infrastructure development in the face of proposed expansions and development projects within the district.

Key Concerns and Safety Issues
During a recent Planning and Zoning Committee meeting, several safety issues related to the proposed YMCA expansion were brought to the forefront. These concerns led to a 5-0 vote to deny the request for plat approval. It’s important to note that some city officials advocated for approval, but Gabe, responsible for road development within the city, expressed his apprehensions and ultimately called for denial. These interactions are available for public viewing in the Planning and Zoning video from that meeting.

The safety concerns raised during the meeting encompassed multiple aspects. The roads and infrastructure in the area have not been adequately developed to handle the increased traffic, and it may remain insufficient for an extended period. Notably, one of the roads designated for increased traffic lacks basic safety features such as a center stripe, gutters, sidewalks, and curbs. Despite this, the YMCA has projected that they will host approximately 1,000 people per day in phase one of their expansion on these inadequately developed roads. This number does not even account for the expected increase in traffic with future expansions. Furthermore, the absence of traffic control devices like traffic lights poses additional safety risks. The location of the YMCA is situated approximately one mile from these roads.During a recent Planning and Zoning Committee meeting, several safety issues related to the proposed YMCA expansion were brought to the forefront. Rezoning and Accountability Concerns
Another area of concern is the YMCA’s inconsistent stance on services due to the land’s AE designation. The YMCA has refrained from seeking a rezone because of concerns that the local community may vote against it. Responsible Growth Midland has expressed reservations about the YMCA not being held accountable if they fail to adhere to the guidelines they are currently permitted to operate under based on the AE designation.
Call for Responsible Growth and Safety
Responsible Growth Midland acknowledges that opposition to the YMCA expansion may not be a popular stance in certain circles. However, the group emphasizes that their stance is rooted in ensuring the safety and responsible growth of the community. Safety remains a paramount concern for the citizens of District 7, and Responsible Growth Midland is determined to address it.
Community Involvement and Advocacy
The organization invites residents, the City Council, and all concerned parties to review the Planning and Zoning Committee’s safety concerns that led to the denial of plat approval. The Responsible Growth Midland group seeks to engage in a constructive dialogue with city officials and stakeholders to find a balanced and safe resolution to the issues at hand.
